Planting trees for the first time is a unique experience, and like most of life’s experiences, it is not guaranteed to produce an unalloyed success. Here are some ideas to guide you along your way:
Choose your trees wisely. Are you planting the same species year after year? Or would you rather try a new tree that has not been grown in as long as the first choice? Will your native trees thrive in your landscape in spite of your choices?
Your landscape must be adaptable. Some gardeners, for example, choose their plants carefully so that they will not compete with their other landscaping elements. Some landscape architects select trees that will thrive in particular sites. Another way to ensure your chosen plants will grow well is to arrange them where they can get the sunlight and nutrients they need without competing with other plants.
Do not plant too many flowers on your planting. Flowers, just like trees, all need plenty of sunlight. Too many flowers can lower the concentration of natural light to a point where it will do damage to your garden. Choose the flowers carefully so that they do not overcrowd or spoil the appearance of your plantings.
Choose plants that are going to survive. Some plants are known to be sensitive to sunburn. Check the type of soil, your plants are in and choose plants that are not water-logged. Good drainage and adequate air circulation are also important for the health of plants.
Be sure to check for air-borne pests before planting. There are certain bugs that feed on plants. To protect against these creatures, cover plants with plastic during the day. Plant outdoors during the cooler part of the day to allow your plants to breathe and take the air they need.
If you are planting seeds from an external source, the best approach is to bury them individually in the soil. Look for loose and often rounded dirt around your site to establish holes. Dig at least two holes of the same size. Plant the seeds on top of this surface and add a layer of dirt to the bottom of the holes.
When planting seeds from an external source, remove them as they emerge from the ground and place them in the holes. Cover them with soil and add more soil to the bottom of the holes. This ensures that they are exposed to the light and air before being planted in the ground.
Do not plant trees close together. This is one of the biggest mistakes that beginner gardeners make. Trees are designed to be in large groups. A straight line between them creates an avenue for wind and rain to pass through and affect the foliage. It also makes for a slippery walk.
Take care to keep the roots clean, and you may choose to dig around them, but do not cut off the roots altogether. Roots grow back, so if you cut them off, they have to start over again. You can put some rock salt between the soil and the roots.
